Summer is officially here, and with it, all the things that make life so fun. Barbecues and days by the pool, cocktails by the fire pit at night, the hum of mosquitoes and the shimmer of heat on the pavement; all telltale signs that our favorite time of the year is here again. We at Rocky McElhaney Law Firm can’t wait to join in the fun in the sun, but we just can’t help ourselves; here’s our short list of tools you need to stay safe this summer:
- All those backyard barbecues, pool days, and trips to the beach mean you’re spending a lot of time outdoors. Adequately protecting yourself from the sun can make your summer much more enjoyable; last year’s sunburn tattoo trend saw several teens heading to the hospital with severe burns.
- This one might seem like a no-brainer, but running around in all that sun uses up a lot of water. Heatstroke and dehydration are very real threats; left untreated, heatstroke can damage your brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles. Enjoying a few beers by the pool is fine, but make sure you drink enough water to replace what you lose in the hot sun.
- Washing your hands often can stop the spread of harmful bacteria. Summer picnics and barbecues provide the perfect breeding ground for harmful bacteria; raw meat and high temperatures are a killer combination. Washing up can help prevent food poisoning or other infections from harmful bacteria.
- Safety equipment. Taking the family for a bike ride? Make sure everyone is safely padded and helmeted. Even low-speed collisions can have long-lasting effects; wearing a helmet can save your life and protect your family’s quality of life; there’s no good reason not to clip one on.
Reasonable precautions are the name of the game this season. Keeping these four items on hand during the summer costs little, but can save lots. We understand that sometimes, despite your best efforts, accidents happen. When they do, we fight to protect you and your family from becoming victims of negligence. Enjoy your summer.
