No one ever plans on being hurt in a serious auto accident, but we all take precautions – like buying insurance – in case we are. The Tennessee Yellow DOT Program is another great tool for helping people who suffer some kind of medical emergency while on a Tennessee roadway. The Rocky McElhaney Law Firm supports this worthy program, and we want you to get your free Yellow DOT, too.
The Tennessee Yellow DOT Program works like this: you fill out a sheet of important information about you that first responders would need to know in the event of an emergency. That information includes:
- A list of your medications
- A list of your allergies
- The names and numbers of your emergency contacts
- Any medical conditions you have, or any recent surgical procedures you have had
- Your insurance information
- The names of your doctors
- The names of the hospitals you would prefer*
There is a place on the sheet for your picture, too, so first responders can identify you.
Along with the emergency information sheet, you will also receive a Yellow DOT sticker and a yellow folder. The emergency information goes into the folder; the sticker is placed on the rear driver’s side window. It is a smart idea to fill out a form for every member of your family who might be in the car, and to request the stickers for every car the family uses.
Why you should take advantage of this free service
So far, 680 people have died as a result of a fatal auto accident in Tennessee this year; that’s a 43 person jump from 2015, and we still have more than three months to go before 2016 ends. There have been 238,869 people involved in auto accidents as of June of 2016, and close to 4,000 of them suffered some kind of incapacitating injury because of the crash.
Even the “safest” drivers on the road can sustain an injury in an auto accident caused by another driver, and it is better to be prepared in case the worst comes to pass. That is why the Yellow DOT Program was started: to give injured drivers and passengers a better chance at help (and survival) during the “golden hour” immediately following a collision. (You can read the Act in full here, if you like.)
At the Rocky McElhaney Law Firm, we believe in being prepared for anything. That is why we proudly support the Tennessee Yellow DOT Program, as a measure to help first responders save the lives of people seriously injured in an auto accident on a Tennessee roadway. It’s free to join, and it could save your life – or the life of your loved one.

*Hospital preferences do not guarantee you’ll be taken to that hospital. Information on the emergency sheet is the sole responsibility of the participant. Any information in your folder will “not kept by any agency or person and will only be accessed by first responders in case of a roadway incident where emergency medical attention is needed.”
