Bimbo Bakeries of Horsham, Pennsylvania has issued a voluntary recall of 48,000 packages of bread sold in 11 states after a consumer reported pieces of glass on the outside of one loaf of bread. It is believed the glass came from a broken light bulb at a company factory.

The affected packages have “best by” dates from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, and a “bakery code” of 16 58. The brands affected include:

  • Kroger 100% Whole Wheat Round Top Bread 16oz
  • L’Oven Fresh Fit & Active Multigrain Bread 20oz
  • Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat Bread 20oz
  • Sara Lee Honey Wheat Bread 20oz
  • Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat Bread 16oz
  • Sara Lee Honey Wheat Bread Twinpack 2lbs 8oz
  • Sara Lee Delightful Healthy Multi-Grain Bread Twinpack 2lbs 8oz
  • Sara Lee Delightful Healthy Multi-Grain Bread 20oz
  • Sara Lee Delightful 100% Whole Wheat made with Real Honey Bread 20oz
  • Bimbo 100% Whole Wheat Bread 16oz
  • Nature’s Harvest Stoneground 100% Whole Wheat Bread 20oz
  • Natures’ Harvest Stoneground 100% Whole Wheat Bread Twinpack 2lbs 8oz
  • Great Value 100% Whole Wheat Roundtop Bread 16oz
  • Great Value 100% Whole Wheat Bread 20oz

These brands were sold in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennesse, Virginia and West Virginia. The company has requested that all affected products be pulled from store shelves. If you have purchased an affected product, you may return it to any retail location for a full refund.

This recall is particularly dangerous because glass is one of the most difficult substances to remove from the body. It can be difficult to detect in scans, and won’t show up easily on a standard x-ray. Small fragments are especially dangerous, and in worst case scenarios can cause bowel perforations, internal bleeding, and septicemia.
